Dichloromethane (DCM)
ANHUI LIWEI CHEMICAL CO.,LIMITED
[Introduction]
Dichloromethane (DCM or methylene chloride) is an organic chloride with the molecular formula CH2Cl2. This colorless, volatile liquid has a sweet odor similar to chloroform and is widely used as a solvent. Although it is immiscible in water, it is polar and miscible with many organic solvents.
Dichloromethane is a colorless, transparent, volatile liquid with an ether-like odor and sweet taste. It is nonflammable, but can form explosive mixtures with high concentrations of oxygen. Dichloromethane is slightly soluble in water and is most commonly used as an organic solvent. Dichloromethane readily dissolves in phenol-aldehydes, ketones, glacial acetic acid, phosphates, formaldehyde, cyclohexylamine, and acetoacetic acid.

[Applications]
DCM's volatility and ability to dissolve a wide range of organic compounds make it a useful solvent for many chemical processes.
1. In the food industry, it is used to decaffeinate coffee and tea, and to prepare hop extracts and other flavorings. Its volatility makes it useful as an aerosol propellant and a blowing agent for polyurethane foam.
2. DCM can chemically weld certain plastics. For example, it can be used to seal electric meter casings. It is often sold as a primary component of plastic welding adhesives and is also widely used by model enthusiasts to join plastic parts. It is often referred to as "Di-clo."
3. In the garment printing industry, it is used to remove heat-sealed garment transfer films. Its volatility also leads to its use in the creation of novelty items such as bubble lamps and jukebox displays.
4. DCM is used in materials testing in civil engineering: specifically, it is used as a solvent in asphalt material testing to separate the binder from asphalt or crushed stone aggregate for testing.
5. Research has found that extracting dichloromethane from Asparagopsis taxiformis, a seaweed feed used for cattle, can reduce methane emissions by 79%.
