Modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is an extremely plastic polymer compound obtained by modifying ordinary polyvinyl alcohol. This modification process mainly takes advantage of the chemical reactivity of the double bonds, ester groups, and hydroxyl groups in polyvinyl alcohol after alcoholysis to change the side-chain groups or structure, introduce other monomers to form copolymers or introduce other functional groups to change the chemical structure of the polyvinyl alcohol macromolecule. Modified polyvinyl alcohol combines the basic properties of polyvinyl alcohol with the advantages of other additives or treatments to provide excellent physicochemical properties, such as high molecular weight, thermal stability, water resistance, and high tensile strength. Modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) grades with varying degrees of polymerization, hydrolysis, and comonomers.PVC grades usually refer to materials that approach or meet the standards of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in terms of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, although their chemical structures may differ.
Environmental protection: Modified
polyvinyl alcohol can be used as
biodegradable plastic
products, with
no pollution to the environment; it is
an ideal substitute for traditional
plastic products,
which helps
to reduce the pollution of plastic
waste to the environment
fundamentally.
Medical: Modified polyvinyl alcohol
can be used as biomedical materials in
cardiovascular
interventional
devices, bone repair materials, oral
repair materials and so on. Its good
biocompatibility
and
biodegradability can effectively
reduce the body's rejection of the
material and damage and
improve
patient comfort.
Food field: Modified polyvinyl alcohol
has excellent heat and moisture
resistance in food
packaging,
effectively extending the freshness
period of food. In addition, it can be
used as a food
additive,
helping to improve the quality of
food.
Textile: Blending modified polyvinyl
alcohol with yarn can increase the
wrinkle resistance
anti-static,
and anti-bacterial properties of the
yarn, thus improving the comfort and
durability of
textiles.
Coatings: Modified polyvinyl alcohol
can be used as a film-forming agent
for coatings to
improve adhesion
and water resistance while reducing
the release of volatile organic
compounds, making
coatings more
environmentally friendly.
In addition, modified polyvinyl
alcohol can be used in many
industries, such as chemicals,
printing, paper
making, tanning, agriculture,
medicine, packaging, ceramics,
electronics, make-up,
construction, and so
on. It also has important applications
in the preparation of water-soluble
adhesives,
modifiers for starch
adhesives, photographic adhesives, and
sealants resistant to benzene
solvents.
The production process of modified polyvinyl alcohols usually involves several steps, including polymerisation reactions, purification and processing, and modification treatments. During the modification stage, the physical and chemical properties can be altered by introducing specific functional groups or reacting with other compounds.
Packaging: Sealed packaging using
moisture, dust and UV resistant
packaging materials
Storage: It should be stored in a dry,
cool and well-ventilated place,
avoiding direct
sunlight and high
temperature.
Modified polyvinyl alcohols are not
inherently toxic, but in some cases,
after certain
treatments or
reactions, modified polyvinyl alcohols
can be converted into toxic substances
with potential
health
effects.
Furthermore, in the natural
environment, particularly in water,
modified polyvinyl alcohols
have a
tendency to disintegrate into
minuscule particles, forming what is
known as "microplastics."
These
microplastics can infiltrate the human
body through the food chain,
presenting a significant
health
hazard. Certain types of modified
polyvinyl alcohols can also directly
harm cell membranes,
leading to
cell death or reproductive health
complications.
Therefore, although modified polyvinyl
alcohols are not inherently toxic,
their potential
health and
environmental risks cannot be ignored.
When using and handling them,
appropriate safety
practices should
be strictly followed, and their
potential impact on the environment
and humans should be
minimized.
