Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) 100-10F & PVA 1099F
Overview
PVA , categorized as a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), is produced through an alcoholysis reaction and subsequent polymerization of vinyl acetate. This material manifests as a white, powdery substance, characterized by stability and non-toxicity, and it exhibits remarkable water solubility. When introduced to water at room temperature, it readily dissolves to create a stable colloid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Polyvinyl Alcohol PVA 100-10F & PVA 1099F Applications

1. Coatings Industry: Enhances Water-Based Paint Stability and Film Formation
PVA 100-10F is an excellent dual-purpose thickener and film-forming agent for water-based paints and varnishes. It can alleviate the drawbacks of water-based systems, namely, easy sagging and poor film formation.
Thickening Method: The hydroxyl groups on its molecular chain interact with water, increasing viscosity without sagging. It also stabilizes pigments and fillers, preventing them from delaminating and settling. It is particularly suitable for matte paints and low-VOC interior latex paints.
Film-Forming Function: Compared to traditional solvent-based additives, PVA 100-10F is water-soluble, film-forming, non-volatile, and harmless. The crosslinking of hydroxyl groups enhances paint film adhesion, flexibility, and scrub resistance. It is suitable for children's indoor wall paints, where it resists cracking even with frequent rubbing.
Suitable Applications: Water-based wood paints, architectural latex paints, and anti-corrosion water-based paints, especially for environmentally friendly interior applications.

2. Adhesives: Strong and environmentally friendly, suitable for a wide range of materials.
PVA 100-10F is the core raw material for water-soluble adhesives. It has high bonding strength and is formaldehyde-free, making it a viable alternative to solvent-based adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde adhesives.
Woodworking adhesives form a chemical bond by hydrogenating the hydroxyl groups of wood fibers, resulting in high adhesion and aging resistance. A crosslinker is required to prevent moisture-induced debonding.
Paper adhesives form a continuous adhesive layer over the paper surface, drying and becoming transparent. They are suitable for labels, envelopes, and carton seals. The solids content needs to be adjusted to prevent brittleness.
It can also be used for non-woven fabrics and flocking adhesives, with the concentration adjusted to suit various materials.

3. Textiles: Yarn protection and dyeing assistance.
Warp sizing uses PVA 100-10F as the sizing agent. It protects the yarn and resists breakage during weaving due to friction. The backsizing is highly water-soluble, minimizing fiber damage and making it particularly suitable for high-end cotton and knitwear. As a printing and dyeing auxiliary, it adjusts the rheology of printing pastes, ensuring clear, non-bleeding patterns and enhancing dye fixation. It is suitable for both reactive and disperse dyes.

4. Papermaking: Improves paper quality and water resistance. When applied to paper, PVA molecules form a thin film, increasing the paper's tensile strength and folding resistance, while reducing linting during printing. After cross-linking, it becomes hydrophobic and absorbs less water, making it suitable for packaging and toilet paper.

5. Other Uses: Water-Soluble Materials and Fine Chemicals. Water-soluble films can be compounded with other water-soluble resins to create small packaging films. They dissolve instantly in water and are used in pesticides, fertilizers, and detergents, ensuring environmental protection and zero waste.

As a pharmaceutical excipient, it can be used as a film coating for tablets, masking bitterness and controlling drug release. It can also be used to thicken eye drops and prolong their effect, offering excellent results.

In cosmetics, it is used as a thickening and stabilizing agent in lotions and creams; and as a film-forming agent in hair sprays and mousses, providing flexible coverage, easy washing, and no residue.
