In all chemical applications, physics comes first; when it comes to powder quality, mesh size is paramount. Polyvinyl alcohol, known in the West as PVA, is a water-soluble polymer. It is produced by converting acetylene through polymerization and hydrolysis. It is white and odorless, lightweight and sticky, and dissolves in water to form a colloid-like substance. Its applications are wide-ranging, encompassing building materials, adhesives, paper, textiles, and ceramics. However, the finished product varies in coarseness and fineness, commonly referred to as "mesh number," which refers to the degree of mesh size in a sieve. Mesh Number Explanation
The coarseness of a powder is determined by the sieve. Mesh number
refers to the number of openings in a square inch. Ten mesh means
large openings, while 120 mesh means fine as dust. The higher the
mesh number, the finer the powder and the faster it dissolves.
Coarse powders clump together and are difficult to disperse, while
fine powders separate without clumping, making them suitable for
both instant dissolution and uniform mixing. The difference in
industrial applications lies in the mesh number.

How to Choose the Right Mesh Size
For any job, mesh size is crucial. The general outline is as follows:
For quick dissolution, a 120-mesh fine powder is ideal, dissolving immediately in water.
For uniformity, a 80-mesh fine powder or finer is ideal, ensuring smooth mixing without clumping.
For rough equipment, a 10-25-mesh fine powder is sufficient.
For applications with varying final product qualities, fine powder is preferred for emulsion polymerization; for paper sizing, a coarse powder is acceptable.
