Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) BP 17

ANHUI LIWEI CHEMICAL CO.,LIMITED

[Introduction]

"Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) CCP PVA BP 17 is produced through polymerization of vinyl acetate followed by high-degree alcoholysis. This white, granular material is non-toxic, highly stable, and exhibits good water solubility—readily dissolving in warm water (60-90℃) to form a high-viscosity stable colloid. With a controlled degree of alcoholysis and high viscosity, it is particularly suitable for high-performance water-based coatings, industrial textile sizing agents, high-strength paper bonding, and structural architectural adhesive applications."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Polyvinyl alcohol?

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic polymer that is soluble in water. It is produced by the polymerization of vinyl acetate and subsequent hydrolysis of the polymer. The hydrolysis process converts the acetate groups into alcohol groups, resulting in a polymeric chain with repeating alcohol units.
PVA is known for its excellent film-forming and adhesive properties. It is often used as a component in adhesives, coatings, and films. PVA films are transparent and have a high tensile strength, making them useful for various applications. PVA is also biodegradable, which adds to its appeal in environmentally friendly applications. One of the notable characteristics of PVA is its water solubility. When in contact with water, PVA dissolves, forming a viscous solution. This property makes PVA widely used in applications such as textile sizing, paper coatings, and as a component in detergents and personal care products.

In addition to its solubility, PVA exhibits good chemical resistance, making it suitable for use in coatings and barriers. It is also resistant to oils, greases, and organic solvents. These properties make PVA versatile and applicable in various industries, including packaging, textiles, paper, construction, and pharmaceuticals.

Furthermore, PVA can be crosslinked with certain agents to enhance its properties further. Crosslinked PVA exhibits improved mechanical strength, thermal stability, and water resistance, making it useful in applications such as membranes, gels, and drug delivery systems.

Overall, polyvinyl alcohol is a versatile polymer with a wide range of applications due to its film-forming, adhesive, solubility, and chemical resistance properties.

CCP PVA BP-17 Applications:

CCP PVA BP-17 is a high-performance polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) resin available in two subtypes: Type 1788 (degree of alcoholysis: 87.0%~89.0%) and Type 1799 (degree of alcoholysis: 98.0%~99.0%), both featuring high viscosity and excellent mechanical properties. Endowed with superior film-forming ability, strong adhesion, and enhanced water resistance (especially Type 1799), this synthetic polymer is tailored for high-demand industrial applications requiring durability and reliability.

1. Adhesives: CCP PVA BP-17 is a core component in high-strength adhesive formulations, delivering exceptional bonding performance for porous and non-porous materials such as wood, metal, fabric, and engineering plastics. It is particularly suitable for structural architectural adhesives, high-grade woodworking adhesives, and protective colloids for high-performance redispersible polymer powders. Type 1799, with its high alcoholysis degree, offers enhanced water resistance, making it ideal for outdoor and humid-environment applications. The resin exhibits excellent compatibility with crosslinking agents and other additives, enabling formulation optimization for specific bonding requirements.

2. Water-Based Coatings: This PVA resin excels in high-performance water-based coatings and industrial paints, providing outstanding film toughness, scratch resistance, and adhesion to substrates like metal, wood, and concrete. It is widely used in industrial protective coatings, high-end architectural decorative coatings, and textile coating finishes that demand superior durability and weather resistance. Low VOC emissions and environmental friendliness make it compliant with global green coating standards, while its high viscosity contributes to stable coating film formation and reduced sagging.

3. Textile Industry: As a premium warp sizing agent, CCP PVA BP-17 is designed for high-strength fibers such as polyester, nylon, and blended yarns. It forms a tough, flexible film on warp yarns, significantly improving weaving efficiency, reducing yarn breakage, and enhancing fabric quality. The resin offers balanced adhesion and desizing properties—Type 1788 is easy to desize with warm water, while Type 1799 provides better abrasion resistance for heavy-duty weaving processes. It is suitable for high-speed textile production lines and premium fabric manufacturing.

4. Paper Industry: CCP PVA BP-17 serves as a high-performance additive in papermaking, including surface sizing, pigment coating binders, and fiber bonding agents. It enhances paper’s surface smoothness, glossiness, and printability, while significantly improving mechanical strength (tensile, tear, and burst strength) and water resistance. The resin is ideal for producing high-grade packaging paper, specialty paper (e.g., thermal paper, label paper), and printing paper for high-speed offset and digital printing. Type 1799, with its high alcoholysis degree, further boosts paper’s oil and solvent resistance.

5. Biodegradable Films: Leveraging its high toughness and eco-friendly properties, CCP PVA BP-17 is a key raw material for high-performance biodegradable films. The films produced are characterized by excellent tensile strength, tear resistance, and moisture barrier performance, suitable for heavy-duty food packaging, durable agricultural mulch films, and industrial packaging materials. These films meet stringent environmental standards, offering a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics while maintaining practical usability.

6. Emulsifiers & Dispersants: This PVA resin functions as a high-efficiency emulsifier and dispersant in complex formulations, stabilizing high-viscosity emulsions and suspensions. It ensures uniform dispersion of solid particles and liquid components in industrial coatings, inks, and agricultural chemicals (e.g., pesticide emulsions), improving product stability, storage life, and application performance. Its high molecular weight enhances colloidal stability, making it suitable for demanding industrial production processes.

7. Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Industries: CCP PVA BP-17 is utilized in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products due to its non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and high film-forming quality. In pharmaceuticals, it serves as a binder for tablets, a film-forming agent for oral films, and a matrix material for controlled-release drug delivery systems (especially Type 1799 for its stability). In cosmetics, it acts as a long-lasting film-forming agent in hair styling products, a moisturizing and thickening agent in creams and lotions, and a protective barrier in facial masks, enhancing product efficacy and user experience.
